Moving to Vienna: Astrocartography and Your Relocation Chart

4 min read

Vienna lies at about 48.2°N, 16.4°E. Moving there from Kyiv rotates your chart's meridian about 14.1° west, from Kharkiv about 19.9°, from Dnipro about 18.7° and from Lviv about 7.7°. The Midheaven moves by roughly 13–15 zodiac degrees from Kyiv, so several planets can change house. Vienna is about 2° south of Kyiv, which adds a small Ascendant change on top of the rotation. Any MC or IC line between roughly 13.7°E and 19.1°E passes within about 200 km of the city.

Vienna on the map

Vienna sits at about 48.2°N and 16.4°E. At that latitude one degree of longitude is about 74 km, so any MC or IC line between roughly 13.7°E and 19.1°E passes within about 200 km of the city. If you are new to reading lines, start with How to Read an Astrocartography Map.

Austria hosts a sizeable Ukrainian community, concentrated in Vienna. Many people also compare Vienna with the capitals around it: Bratislava, Budapest and Prague are each within a few hours by train.

How far your chart rotates

Moving fromLongitudeShift to ViennaTypical effect
Kharkiv36.2°Eabout 19.9° westTwo thirds of a sign; many planets change house
Dnipro35.0°Eabout 18.7° westSimilar to Kharkiv, with no latitude change
Odesa30.7°Eabout 14.3° westNearly half a sign; several planets change house
Kyiv30.5°Eabout 14.1° westSame as Odesa
Lviv24.0°Eabout 7.7° westA quarter of a sign; planets near cusps change house
Warsaw21.0°Eabout 4.6° westA small shift, but 4° further south

Moving west turns the house frame to earlier zodiac degrees, so a planet a few degrees before a cusp in your natal chart moves forward into the next house. The relocation chart article explains how to check this.

The 48th parallel

Vienna is further south than Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Warsaw or Kraków. For most people from central and northern Ukraine, that means a small extra change to the Ascendant: from Kyiv, about 1.6° on average and up to about 3°, depending on your rising sign. For some birthplaces, though, Vienna leaves the latitude almost untouched.

BirthplaceLatitudeDifference from Vienna
Dnipro48.5°Nabout 0.3°
Chernivtsi48.3°Nabout 0.1°
Uzhhorod48.6°Nabout 0.4°
Kyiv50.5°Nabout 2.2°
Odesa46.5°Nabout 1.7°

If you were born in Dnipro, Chernivtsi or Uzhhorod, a paran you had at home is also active in Vienna, and in Munich, which lies on the same parallel about 355 km to the west.

A worked example: Vienna, Bratislava or Budapest

Consider Iryna, a hypothetical client born in Dnipro, who is moving with her two children and wants a place that feels like home quickly. Her priority is family life, so she looks at IC lines. Suppose her Moon IC line runs at about 17.5°E.

Hypothetical example: a Moon IC line at about 17.5°E. Bratislava sits about 30 km from it, Vienna about 85 km, Budapest about 115 km. Prague is about 220 km away; Munich is far to the west.

Bratislava and Vienna are both in the strong zone; Budapest is in the noticeable range. Because all three cities are close to Iryna's birth latitude, the relocation charts differ mainly by rotation: Budapest's Midheaven is about 2.7 zodiac degrees later than Vienna's. The next questions for her are practical ones: schools in her language, rent, and whether she can work.

For the goal-first method she used, see Where Should I Move?.

Vienna, Brno and Wrocław share a meridian

Brno is only about 0.2° east of Vienna, and Wrocław about 0.7° east, far to the north. Any MC or IC line through Vienna runs within about 50 km of both. If you are comparing Vienna with Brno or Prague, the Prague guide covers Brno as well; for Wrocław see the Wrocław guide.

A short checklist for Vienna

  1. Confirm your birth time and the historical time zone of your birthplace.
  2. Note your MC and IC lines between about 13°E and 20°E, and any AC or DC curves crossing Austria and western Hungary.
  3. Check whether you have a paran near 48°N, especially if you were born in Dnipro, Chernivtsi or Uzhhorod.
  4. Build a Vienna relocation chart, and one for Bratislava or Budapest if they are on your list.
  5. Weigh the result against work, schools, housing and community.

For the big picture, see the astrocartography guide.

Key takeaways

  • From Kyiv, Vienna rotates your chart about 14.1°; from Kharkiv about 19.9°; from Dnipro about 18.7°; from Lviv about 7.7°; from Warsaw about 4.6°.
  • Vienna sits on the 48th parallel with Dnipro, Chernivtsi and Munich. For people born there, the Vienna chart is close to a pure rotation.
  • Vienna and Bratislava are about 55 km apart and on the same latitude: astrologically they are almost one city.
  • Brno and Wrocław lie on nearly the same meridian as Vienna, so they share its MC and IC lines.
  • Read Vienna through a relocation chart and every line near 16.4°E, not just one.

Common questions

Is Vienna a good city for me astrologically?

It depends on your birth chart. Check your lines within roughly 300 km of 16.4°E and build a Vienna relocation chart to see which planets sit on angles and which changed house. The same city can feel supportive to one person and demanding to another.

How much does my chart change if I move from Kyiv to Vienna?

Vienna is about 14.1° of longitude west of Kyiv, so the Midheaven and house cusps move back by roughly 13–15 zodiac degrees depending on the sign. Planets up to that distance before a cusp move into the next house. Vienna is also about 2.2° further south, which changes the Ascendant by up to about 3° more.

Vienna or Bratislava: which is better astrologically?

The difference is tiny. Bratislava is about 0.7° east of Vienna and on the same latitude, so their MC and IC lines are about 55 km apart and the Ascendant differs by less than a degree. Practical factors such as cost of living, language and work permits will separate them far more.

Vienna or Budapest: what is the astrological difference?

Budapest is about 2.7° east of Vienna and slightly further south. That moves MC and IC lines by about 200 km, enough for a line to be strong in one city and faint in the other. Compare your lines around 16–19°E and both relocation charts.

I was born in Dnipro. Why does Vienna feel familiar?

Practical reasons first: climate, a Central European rhythm and a Ukrainian community. Astrologically, Vienna lies on almost exactly the same latitude as Dnipro, so parans and the latitude part of the Ascendant are unchanged. The chart turns by about 18.7°, but its shape stays the same.
