Moving to Amsterdam: Astrocartography and Your Relocation Chart

3 min read

Amsterdam lies at about 52.4°N, 4.9°E. Moving there from Kyiv rotates your chart's meridian about 25.6° west, from Kharkiv about 31.3°, from Lviv about 19.1° and from Warsaw about 16.1°. From Kyiv the Midheaven moves roughly 24–28 zodiac degrees, close to a whole sign, so many planets change house, often by one house each. Because Amsterdam is on the same latitude as Warsaw and Berlin, a second move from either of them is almost a pure rotation. Any MC or IC line between roughly 2°E and 7.8°E passes within about 200 km of the city.

Amsterdam on the map

Amsterdam sits at about 52.4°N and 4.9°E. At that latitude one degree of longitude is about 68 km, so any MC or IC line between roughly 2°E and 7.8°E passes within about 200 km of the city. That band covers the whole of the Netherlands and Belgium and reaches into western Germany. If you are new to reading lines, start with How to Read an Astrocartography Map.

A large Ukrainian community has formed in the Netherlands since 2022, spread across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Many people arrived after a first stop in Poland or Germany.

How far your chart rotates

Moving fromLongitudeShift to AmsterdamTypical effect
Kharkiv36.2°Eabout 31.3° westAbout a whole sign; most planets move one house
Dnipro35.0°Eabout 30.1° westSame as Kharkiv
Odesa30.7°Eabout 25.8° westMost of a sign; many planets change house
Kyiv30.5°Eabout 25.6° westSame as Odesa
Lviv24.0°Eabout 19.1° westTwo thirds of a sign
Warsaw21.0°Eabout 16.1° westHalf a sign, with no latitude change
Berlin13.4°Eabout 8.5° westA quarter of a sign, with no latitude change

Moving west turns the house frame to earlier zodiac degrees, so a planet a few degrees before a cusp in your natal chart moves forward into the next house. When the shift approaches 30°, as it does from Kharkiv and Dnipro, almost every planet is "a few degrees before" the next cusp, so the typical result is that each planet moves forward by about one house. The relocation chart article explains the mechanics.

The 52nd parallel: Warsaw, Berlin, Amsterdam

CityLatitudeLongitudeCompared with Amsterdam
Warsaw52.2°N21.0°ESame latitude, 16.1° east
Berlin52.5°N13.4°ESame latitude, 8.5° east
Kyiv50.5°N30.5°E1.9° south, 25.6° east
London51.5°N0.1°W0.9° south, 5° west

If Amsterdam is your second or third city after Warsaw or Berlin, the latitude does not change at all. Parans you had there stay active, and the Ascendant changes only because the sky has turned. For people born in Kyiv, the latitude difference of about 1.9° adds roughly one to one and a half degrees of Ascendant change on average. The Warsaw and Berlin guides cover the earlier steps.

A worked example: Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Cologne

Consider Dmytro, a hypothetical client born in Odesa, who has lived in Warsaw for two years and now has offers in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Cologne. He wants his career to become more visible. Suppose his Sun MC line runs at about 6.0°E.

Sun MC2°W2°E6°E10°E14°ELondonRotterdamAmsterdamCologneHamburgBerlin
Hypothetical example: a Sun MC line at about 6.0°E. Cologne sits about 65 km from it, Amsterdam about 75 km, Rotterdam about 105 km. Hamburg is about 265 km to the east; London is over 400 km to the west.

Hypothetical example: a Sun MC line at about 6.0°E. Cologne sits about 65 km from it, Amsterdam about 75 km, Rotterdam about 105 km. Hamburg is about 265 km to the east; London is over 400 km to the west.

All three cities are in the strong zone. What separates them:

  • Latitude. Amsterdam keeps his Warsaw latitude exactly. Cologne, at 50.9°N, is about 1.4° further south; Rotterdam about 0.5°. The Ascendant differences are small.
  • Relocation charts. Cologne is about 2° east of Amsterdam, so its Midheaven is about 2 zodiac degrees later. If Dmytro's Sun is within a couple of degrees of the 10th-house cusp, that matters.
  • Life. Language, taxes, industry and community differ more between the Netherlands and Germany than the charts do.

A short checklist for Amsterdam

  1. Confirm your birth time and the historical time zone of your birthplace.
  2. Note your MC and IC lines between about 1°E and 9°E, and any AC or DC curves crossing the Low Countries.
  3. If you lived in Warsaw or Berlin first, compare those relocation charts with Amsterdam's.
  4. Build relocation charts for Rotterdam, Utrecht or Cologne if they are also options.
  5. Weigh the result against work, housing, language and community.

For the big picture, see the astrocartography guide.

Key takeaways

  • From Kyiv, Amsterdam rotates your chart about 25.6°; from Kharkiv about 31.3°; from Lviv about 19.1°; from Warsaw about 16.1°; from Berlin about 8.5°.
  • A rotation close to 30° shifts most house cusps by nearly a whole sign, so many planets move forward by one house.
  • Amsterdam, Warsaw and Berlin all sit near 52.3°N. Moving between them changes the chart by rotation alone.
  • Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht are within about 0.6° of Amsterdam's meridian: for MC and IC lines, the Randstad is one place.
  • Read Amsterdam through a relocation chart and every line near 4.9°E, not just one.

Common questions

Is Amsterdam a good city for me astrologically?

It depends on your birth chart. Check your lines within roughly 300 km of 4.9°E and build an Amsterdam relocation chart to see which planets sit on angles and which changed house. The same city can be energising for one person and draining for another.

How much does my chart change if I move from Kyiv to Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is about 25.6° of longitude west of Kyiv, so the Midheaven and house cusps move back by roughly 24–28 zodiac degrees depending on the sign. That is close to a whole sign: a planet that sat in the 6th house in Kyiv often sits in the 7th in Amsterdam. Signs and aspects stay the same.

Amsterdam or Rotterdam: is there an astrological difference?

Very little. Rotterdam is only about 0.4° west of Amsterdam and 0.5° further south, so MC and IC lines are about 30 km apart and the Ascendant changes by well under a degree on average. Choose on work, housing and lifestyle.

I moved from Warsaw to Amsterdam. What changed?

Amsterdam is about 16.1° west of Warsaw and on almost exactly the same latitude. The Warsaw chart simply turns by about half a sign: planets up to about 15–17 zodiac degrees before a cusp move into the next house. Nothing else about the chart's shape changes.

Amsterdam or Brussels: what is the difference?

Brussels is about 0.55° west of Amsterdam, so the two share MC and IC lines. It is about 1.5° further south, which changes the Ascendant by about a degree on average. The difference between the cities is practical far more than astrological.
